Tell the Governor: Stop Your Attacks on California Seniors and People with Disabilities!

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed drastic cuts to the In-Home Supportive Services program, which provides vital services to low-income seniors and disabled people in California.

The governor’s proposal would threaten the independence of thousands of IHSS consumers and jeopardize the wages and benefits of their hardworking caregivers.

Additionally, the proposal would end up costing more by forcing consumers into nursing homes, which are more expensive than in-home care.

UHW’s healthcare workers are united against the governor’s assault on IHSS. Send him the letter below, so that he knows Californians won’t stand for his attacks.

Subject: Governor: Stop Your Attacks on California Seniors and People with Disabilities!

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am a supporter of caregivers and consumers in the In-Home Supportive Services program, and I cannot sit back and let you roll back the clock on homecare. Your proposed budget cuts will push more homecare workers into poverty and threaten the independence and safety of thousands of disabled and elderly Californians.

As healthcare workers, IHSS caregivers provide an important service for seniors and people with disabilities. Without these services, many of these consumers would be forced to leave their homes and live in nursing homes, costing the state even more money.

Your effort to cut caregivers' wages and benefits and balance the state budget on the backs of seniors and people with disabilities is a destructive step backwards. It is also an attack on the state's most vulnerable residents -- those who can least afford the cuts.

I ask you to work with the state legislature to pass a budget that is just and fair, not one that slashes resources for the care of seniors and people with disabilities.

I am a community supporter of the 55,000 homecare workers of UHW who proudly hold accountable those elected leaders who do not act in the public's best interest. Cutting homecare services and forcing seniors and people with disabilities out of their homes and into nursing homes is not in the public's best interest.

Sincerely,
