Bureau of Land Management Puts Roan Plateau on the Auction Block

 Greetings,

On Monday, June 9th, the Bureau of Land Management announced that they will offer all 55,000 acres of unleased, undeveloped public lands on top and at the base of the Roan Plateau at their August lease sale. Despite 8 years of overwhelming public support for protecting the Roan and with legislation currently in Congress, the Bush Administration is moving full steam ahead with their irresponsible plan to drill. This move represents another slap in the face from the administration to a broad group of Coloradans – from our congressional delegation and governor to sportsmen, local communities and concerned citizens across the state.

However, this is not the end of the road.  Just a month ago, in the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, 144,000 acres were pulled from the May lease sale due to citizen pressure.  We can win here, too. The Campaign to Save Roan Plateau will be organizing an effort to challenge this lease sale and we need your help. We will have more information in the coming weeks about how you can be a part of this effort.

Right now is a great time to submit letters to the editor condemning the BLM's decision and calling for the protection the Roan Plateau deserves. These letters should emphasize that the BLM's plan is a mandate from Washington, not a Colorado solution, and that it ignores widespread opposition to drilling this unique part of Colorado. You can find instructions for submitting letters to the editor on the webpage for most newspapers' opinion page.

Enough is enough: the Roan Plateau's public lands are not for sale!

Reminder: Sign-up for Roan Plateau hikes!

Summer is here and the snow is finally melting atop the Roan Plateau. Unfortunately, the snow wasn't melting fast enough to get up on the Roan for our June hikes, but we've added one more hike in early July to help accommodate all those interested. Take a look at the schedule of remaining outings and contact brian@saveroanplateau.org to reserve your spot today!

  • Sunday, July 6th:  Hike to East Fork Canyon
  • Saturday, July 12th:  Hike to East Fork Canyon
  • Saturday-Sunday, August 2nd-3rd:  Campout on the Roan Plateau
  • Saturday, August 9th: Fly fishing for Colorado River Cutthroat Trout on the Roan Plateau
  • Saturday, September 20th: Hike to see Aspen Trees and Fall Colors
