You are part of a powerful coalition of citizens, local governments and organizations which has been granted an additional 30 days to comment on the Bureau of Land Management (BLM's) draft plan for oil shale development. Already this coalition has generated over 60,000 comments, the bulk of them overwhelmingly opposed the fast pace and unacceptable impacts outlined in the BLM's plan. With growing momentum and support for this campaign we must now focus energy on supporting legislation passed last year to slow the rush to lease oil shale. Last year, Representatives Mark Udall and John Salazar passed crucial legislation to ensure the leasing program for oil shale continues to Go Slow. This legislation prevented the use of taxpayer dollars to design a leasing program for one fiscal year. This funding moratorium prevents the hasty completion of a leasing program before we know what technologies will make extraction viable. The moratorium is up for renewal in Congress this spring.  We must ensure the moratorium continues until West Slope communities can gauge the real impacts from a commercial industry.
