Monday night, the Iowa Senate voted 44-6 to expand children's health insurance in a wide ranging amendment to HF 2539, the Children’s Health Reform bill. Incredible bipartisan support from both parties, including from the party leadership, demonstrates the importance of this legislation.

Advocates like Lutheran Services in Iowa, a member of the Iowa Human Needs Advocates coalition, and their allies were able to find similar best practices in other states that have been proven and will be effective in enrolling children in Iowa's HAWK-I insurance system. Beyond coverage for children, this bill also includes other improvements that have shown the possibility of reducing cost to the overall health care system. The new initiatives added to this bill will encourage Iowans to utilize medical homes, improve management of chronic diseases, expand information and technology in health care, as well as promote more transparency in the medical system. These are all steps that we believe will lead to positive outcomes for the entire Iowa health care system and are a giant step forward for Iowa.
Passing HF 2539 is vital because it commits actual resources that will allow steps to be implemented to improve Iowa's overall health care system. This includes the essential step of making sure ALL children throughout the state have health insurance coverage.
