2009 Transformative Leadership Awards

The Seasons Fund for Social Transformation is pleased to announce our inaugural Transformative Leadership Awards.

The Seasons Fund for Social Transformation invests in opportunities to couple the expansive power of personal transformation with the public work of repairing societal ills in the United States. For more information, please visit: www.seasonsfund.org

The Transformative Leadership Awards are an opportunity to honor leaders who are defining this emerging field of social transformation and developing new models of leadership itself.

In a culture that capitalizes on individual ambition and competition, the Seasons Fund is honoring collaborative teams who embody transformative practices in their partnership and social change efforts. While not the only form of transformative leadership, collaborative leadership highlights many of the fruits of inner awareness, reflection and contemplative practice. For this reason, the five Transformative Leadership Awards will celebrate five collaborative teams (Two or more leaders who work collaboratively as a team, either within one organization or between organizations).

Purpose of the Transformative Leadership Awards

The Seasons Fund for Social Transformation will present five Transformative Leadership Awards (TLA) to leadership teams who have demonstrated a successful commitment to exploring the integration of spirituality (broadly defined) and social change and are modeling collaborative leadership within their organizations.

Each collaborative team will be awarded $30,000. Of the award, $25,000 may be used by the organization[s] in any way that supports their on-going social transformation efforts and at least $5,000 may be used for some form of professional development to advance the work of the team.

Criteria for receiving a Transformative Leadership Award

  • The award will be given to 2 or more leaders who work collaboratively as a team (either within one organization or between organizations).
  • The collaborative effort integrates spirituality/reflection/contemplative practice into its work for social change.
  • The impact of the work is in: frontline organizing, leadership development, organizational transformation, capacity building, field building, and/or movement building.
  • The leaders represent underserved, excluded or marginalized people.
  • The Award will honor work already completed or in process (i.e. we do not want leaders creating new work/projects and new collaborations for this award).
  • The Award must be allocated to one [or more] 501c3 organizations.
  • Current Seasons Fund grantees may apply for the Transformative Leadership Awards. However, TLA applicants may not participate on the selection committee.

Ideal TLA candidates will:

  • Have a demonstrated track record of leadership success;
  • Be change makers and/or innovators within their organizations, regardless of their position;
  • Tell a fresh and compelling story about "transformative leadership", specifically, leadership that advances the effective integration of personal and social transformation.

Ideal TLA candidates will work for organizations that are addressing the root causes of injustice and are also doing one or more of the following:

  • Playing a strategic role within the broader social change field;
  • Are an up and coming organization (i.e. one with significant potential and momentum);
  • Not only building a single institution, but intentionally working to strengthen broader field of activity.
  • Doing work that is replicable or scalable.
