Background Information

The text on the Sukkot Immigration Poster is as follows:

Are our doors still open?

In the first part of the twentieth century, open immigration policies enabled many of our families to start a new life in America.  Today, millions of immigrants still come to the United States in search of economic security and a better life for themselves and their families.  But the virtual impossibility of gaining legal entry into the United States has forced much of the immigrant population into the shadows.  These immigrants care for our children and aging parents, build our homes, and enrich the cultural and civic life of this country. Are we willing to reopen our doors?
