With every
e-mail we send, we always like to share the best news with you
about exactly how far we've come in the last two years. In fact,
last week marked the second anniversary of the launch of the
Five Moms campaign. We couldn't have made it this
far, raising the awareness of medicine abuse among millions of
parents, without the help of all of you.
But we are not done yet, and we still have many more parents
to reach. Although almost two-thirds
of parents say that they have talked to their teens about
cough medicine abuse, there are still a number who have not had
this important conversation.
This is a statistic we can work together to improve. The
first step to prevention is education and talking about the
dangers of abuse: when kids learn a lot about drug use from
their parents, they are up to 50 percent less likely to use. As
a part of the Stop
Medicine Abuse initiative, we want to let you all know
about a new educational tool for parents.
Soon, you will begin seeing this Stop Medicine
Abuse educational icon on the packaging of most OTC cough
medicines containing dextromethorphan (DXM). The educational
icon was developed to serve as a tool to alert parents to the
issue of teen medicine abuse. It serves as a mini public service
announcement for parents, making them aware of the issue of
cough medicine abuse among teens, and points them to StopMedicineAbuse.org
where they can access resources they need, like our Five
Moms articles, to talk about the issue with their
kids.
Keep your eyes out for this new educational icon, and, when
you see it, be sure to share it with family and friends. If you
have an account Facebook,
Twitter, or another network, you could even
add
the icon to your profile. Together, we can make sure more
parents learn about teen medicine abuse and join our effort.
Thank you for all you do,
The Five Moms
