Have you ever heard of teens abusing cough medicine to get high?

I thought I'd heard it all, but this was news to me. Now that I know about it, however, I'm spreading the word.

Cough medicine abuse involves taking an extreme amount of cough medicine--bottle after bottle or pills after pills--to get high. The "high" is caused by dextromethorphan (DXM), a common ingredient found in many cough medicines. DXM is a safe and effective ingredient when taken in the correct doses. When abused in large quantities, however, it can produce a number of dangerous side effects.

According to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, one in 10 teenagers has intentionally abused cough medication to get high. Is your child one of the 2.4 million who has tried it?

Teens also are using the Internet to post instructions and stories about their latest DXM "trips." While they spread the word, too many parents are in left in the dark.
