Take the Five Moms Pledge
Please take a moment to sign this pledge to support the mission of the Five Moms Campaign and to help end teenage cough medicine abuse.
Dear [ Decision Maker ] , The Five Moms Pledge One out of every 10, or 2.4 million teenagers, has reported abusing cough medicine to get high. One out of four teens knows someone who has. Most parents have no idea that this is happening. These trends end with me: I am an individual who is concerned about the dangerous behavior of teens abusing cough medicine. I stand in support of moms whose children and lives have been affected by cough medicine abuse. I believe that parents can turn this trend around by educating each other, talking to our kids, and safeguarding our medicine cabinets. I pledge to tell at least five parents I know that cough medicine abuse is happening and that we can prevent it.

| Background Information |
Did you know that 1 in 10 teens, ages 12-17, has reported having abused cough medicine to get high?
Did you know that only 8 percent of parents are aware of cough medicine abuse?
Teens are intentionally taking huge amounts of medicines to get high. Cough medicine contains the ingredient dextromethorphan, a drug that is safe when taken in the correct dosage. But teens are taking 25 to 50 times the recommended dose of cough medicine, and often combining it with other drugs and alcohol.
Kids use slang like "Dex," "DXM," "Skittles," and "Tussin" to describe cough medicines. And they describe cough medicine abuse with slang like "Robo-tripping," "Dex-ing," "Smurfing," and "Skittling."
The abuse of dextromethorphan becomes even more dangerous when cough medicine is combined with other drugs or alcohol, and taken to excess.
It also is preventable to a large degree.
Thats why the Five Moms are asking you to take the Five Moms Pledge. Stand in support of every mom whose children and lives have been affected. Whether you are a mother of a small child or a teenager, or just have friends with children. Whether you're a grandmother, a father, an uncle, or an aunt.
Pledge today to learn about the dangers of cough medicine abuse. Pledge to talk to your kids about cough medicine abuse. Finally, pledge today to tell everyone you know that cough medicine abuse is happening and parents can prevent it.
