We are in a critical time during the legislative process where the House of Representatives will soon vote on their version of the 2007 Farm Bill, with the Senate expected to start writing a bill as well. For the entire month of August all this will stop while Congress goes on recess. During this time when the Members return home to their states and district they have the opportunity to listen to the opinions of their constituents. And so our efforts must continue.Faith Farm Teams will be hosting a Better Farm Bill Campaign during July and August to reach Congress with a message that a new Farm Bill is necessary. Follow this link http://www.elca.org/advocacy/fb_postcard_campaign_0707.pdf for detailed instructions on how you can organize a campaign in your congregation and community. The idea is simple:
1. Find postcards that depict life in your area
2. Gather a group of people together who care about issues related to the Farm Bill (and that's a lot!) See faithfarmteams.com for Farm Bill educational links
3. Write postcards to your Representative and Senators urging them to support a Farm Bill that honors the needs of people in poverty here and in other countries
4. Deliver the cards with a delegation to the Members' local office or mail them
5. Alert the local press so your community is aware of the activity and what's happening in Congress around the Farm Bill
Postcards are a colorful and descriptive way of reminding your senators and representative that the Farm Bill is important to everyone. Where you live and around the globe, people are depending on Congress to reform the Farm Bill. Tell our legislators you and many others will support their efforts when they return to Washington D.C. in writing a better Farm Bill.
