+ Even during this difficult economic time, we have a moral obligation to continue funding programs that serve those most in need throughout the world, including those suffering from poverty, hunger and HIV/AIDS.

+ A robust International Affairs Budget is also in our national security interest -- we must utilize non-military tools of foreign diplomacy and development to create sustainable security throughout the world.

Sincerely,

Campaign Launched:

Background Information

During this difficult economic time, Members of Congress and President-elect Obama’s transition team are identifying priorities for next year and starting to draft the fiscal year 2010 budget. A bi-partisan letter from Congressional leaders urging President-elect to support a robust International Affairs Budget is circulating right now for sign-on.

As the House and Senate letter states: "We live in an interconnected world where infectious diseases, failed states, economic despair and terrorism have no borders. The global realities of the 21st century require America to utilize the full range of non-military tools as a fundamental pillar of our national security." ? "America has a proud history of bringing hope to millions of people who live under oppressive poverty, face starvation, battle HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases and suffer the consequences of conflict and insecurity. Continued investments in diplomatic, economic, democracy, and development programs are critical to building global stability and saving lives."
