Support Common Sense Solutions to Protect Our Public Health, Water and Wildlife

Colorado needs to expand our energy supply, but there's disturbing evidence that many are willing to do it at significant risk to Colorado's public health, drinking water, and environment.

In 2007 the Colorado Legislature addressed this need by passing – with strong bi-partisan support – laws that directed the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) to update its public health, water and wildlife protections for oil and gas drilling for the first time since the 70s.

The updated protections were passed unanimously by the COGCC in December of 2008. The new rules will ensure that oil and gas drillers don't take shortcuts in their rush to drill; they are balanced and sensible, and reflect substantial input from local governments, the oil and gas industry, property owners, and conservation groups.

Please take action today by writing your State Senator to vote "YES" on HB 1292, the Rules Bill, which includes these critical new protection, and help keep toxics out of our air and water and protect the landscapes that Coloradans love.

Subject: Vote YES on the Oil and Gas Rules Bill (HB 1292)

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

Please vote yes on the Oil and Gas Rules Bill (HB 1292).

The oil and gas rules provide necessary protections for our drinking water, air quality and wildlife.

The 37,000 wells currently operating in Colorado fragment wildlife habitat, and the chemicals used in drilling operations have been found in numerous cases contaminating drinking water supplies.

While extracting this resource is important, the oil and gas industry should not be given priority over other important Colorado industries such as recreation and tourism.

With even more drilling projected for the state, these rules are necessary to make sure we protect our public health, wildlife habitat, and diverse economy.

Vote YES on House Bill 1292!

Sincerely,
