Call for big, bold change in how America does business on transportation

Every six years, Congress sets the country's transportation and infrastructure priorities—allocating hundreds of billions of dollars for projects that shape our communities for generations.

This Fall's reauthorization of the federal transportation bill is our best chance to create a system where cyclists and pedestrians are safe, trains are faster and run cleaner, public transportation is widely available and efficient, roads and bridges are in good repair, and Americans everywhere benefit from fewer greenhouse gas emissions and less air pollution. The platform we are working on, as part of a national coalition, shows our leaders how to use this extraordinary opportunity to create the 21st Century infrastructure we want and need in Colorado.

Subject: It's Time for a 21st Century Transportation System

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am a citizen of Colorado, writing to urge you to help move America in a bold new direction so we can stop wasting billions of dollars on a transportation system that is broken, inequitable, and leaves no room for accountability, as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our transportation sector.

As my representative, I am calling on you to be a leader in deliberations on the 2009 Transportation Bill by supporting the creation of a world-leading, sustainable transportation system that eases our addiction to oil, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and supports safe streets for walking and biking. Please advocate for investment in high-speed trains and public transportation, which can help create jobs now and build for the future. Make sure we invest to rebuild the roads and bridges that are crumbling before throwing money away to expand our aging highway system. Empower local entities to keep the real needs of citizens at the forefront. Reward those communities that incentivize compact development, as well as smarter, more sustainable ways to get around that reduce carbon emissions and ensure that affordable housing and easy access to transit can go hand-in-hand.

The reauthorization of the Transportation Bill comes around just once every six years, and we can?t afford another six-year delay in building the 21st Century transportation system our state craves.

I'm looking forward to seeing your leadership on these critical issues. I hope we can count on your support.

Sincerely,
