For churches like the ELCA and our ecumenical partners, the travel ban has resulted in severe restrictions that have limited our ability to support and share fellowship with fellow Christians in Cuba. Moreover, many of our Cuban partners are unable to get visas for travel to the U.S. for church meetings and theological conferences.

A World Public Opinion poll conducted in April 2009 found that 70 percent of the American public feels that they should be free to visit Cuba.

I urge you to support and co-sponsor the Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act.

(ELCA) to urge your co-sponsorship of [S.428 or H.R. 874], the "Freedom to Travel to Cuba" legislation.

After 50 years of the U.S. embargo on Cuba, the policy has failed to achieve its stated goal of democratic reform in Cuba. In fact, the embargo has resulted in more negative than positive outcomes by restricting American freedoms and hurting the well-being Cuban people, especially the most vulnerable.

It is time for a new direction. A World Public Opinion poll also conducted in April 2009 found that 70 percent of the American public feels that they should be free to visit Cuba.
