Support Requested for Comprehensive Water Package

As you know, Governor Schwarzenegger and U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein met with legislative leaders last week in a bid to re-start negotiations on a comprehensive water bond package. The governor and the senator made it clear their goal is a legislative bond package with bipartisan support.

It is important that you contact your legislators now and urge them to continue working together on a comprehensive water package. They need to hear that action is urgently needed to address a Delta crisis that grows worse by the day.

Talking Points

The Delta is in a deepening crisis that requires action. Every day that goes by without a solution is another day of lost water supply and further deterioration of the environment.

Even with above-normal snowfall, 25 million Californians will see reduced water deliveries this year because of court-ordered restrictions on Delta pumping to protect species.

Water agencies strongly support a comprehensive water package that accomplishes the co-equal goals of restoring the environment and protecting the state’s economic vitality. The package must include investments in local water resources, including water use efficiency, recycling and local surface and groundwater storage projects. It must also include investments in the state’s backbone water storage and conveyance infrastructure.

It is critical that legislators continue working with Governor Schwarzenegger to develop a package with bipartisan support that will work for the environment and the economy.

A legislative solution with broad-based support is in the best interest of all Californians.

Unless we move forward with a comprehensive solution, we are headed on a downward trajectory that will take a heavy toll on the environment and our economy.

The time for action is now.
