37 million Americans live in poverty, more people than live in the entire state of California.  And, it is growing worse every year.  Since the year 2000, 5 million more people have fallen below the poverty line -- disproportionately minorities and children. There is nothing that will improve the lives of more Americans more quickly than ending poverty -- and no cause that calls more clearly upon the basic American values of justice, opportunity and equality.
