In Washington, on Wall Street, and at kitchen tables across the country, it's finally starting to sink in: President Bush's War in Iraq has cost our country dearly, in blood and treasure.
The war and subsequent occupation have claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 U.S troops, and injured more than 28,000 others. But the tremendous losses and missed opportunities extend even further. We have already spent over half a trillion dollars in Iraq, at clip of $3,845 per second. The Joint Economic Committee estimates the total bill for the War, through 2008, will cost the typical family of four a full $16,500.
I support Rep. Barbara Lee's legislation to examine the economic costs of our current engagement in Iraq, and urge the redeployment of our troops as quickly as is safely possible. Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz recently predicted that the overall cost will reach $3 trillion -- it appears we will be forced to fight the looming Iraq Recession with one arm tied behind our backs. At a time when our economy appears headed for a recession, the President's occupation is severely limiting our ability to respond. Given the massive deficits that have built up under President Bush -- thanks in large part to the occupation of Iraq -- we simply don't have the resources we need to inject new life into our economy.
That's why I support Rep. Barbara Lee's legislation to draw attention to the astonishing costs of our misplaced focus on Iraq.
