Help protect the Dolores River Basin

lunch with a view The Dolores River Basin area is comprised of six Colorado's Canyon Country Wilderness Proposal areas. These pristine parcels, which abound with outstanding opportunities for hikers and photographers, botanists and equestrians, bird watchers, archeologists, rock climbers, river runners and the like, are a natural resource legacy to Mesa County residents and visitors alike. This landscape also provides important habitat for a multitude of species including elk, mule deer, and black bear, bald eagles, and peregrine falcons.

This area, with its rugged history and remote untrammeled landscape, will no doubt continue to increase in popularity. As the various demands on this delicate area increase, it becomes ever more important to secure permanent protection.

Please write a letter to the Mesa County Commissioners today and let them know that you support long term protections, including Wilderness designation, for this landscape and the unique natural resource it lends the county.

I want to start by saying thank you for your leadership regarding the designation of the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area! While I recognize there is still work to be done in finalizing the plan for the entire NCA, I would also like to bring your attention to a similar Mesa County landscape in need of balanced and sustainable management: the Northern Dolores River Basin.

The undeveloped landscape of the Northern Dolores River Basin is important for a wide variety of recreational users, and provides important habitat for a multitude of species including elk, mule deer, black bear, bald eagles, and peregrine falcons.

This area, with its rugged history and remote untrammeled landscape, will no doubt continue to increase in popularity.  Now is the time to contemplate how we can effectively highlight and enjoy the qualities which continue to draw people to this landscape without damaging it in the process.

The Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area can provide a workable template for creating a sustainable multiple-use conservation system in the Northern Dolores Basin.

Again, I commend each of your efforts towards preserving the valued untrammeled landscapes in Mesa County.
