Patient Navigator Bill Funding
In June 2005, the Patient Navigator, Outreach and Chronic Disease Prevention Act was passed with strong bipartisan support from Congress and signed into law. However, this program has yet to be funded and without an appropriation will face a sunset provision this year vacating the law.
The final Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education appropriations bill for 2008 funding included $4 million for the Patient Navigator Act start-up funding. However, this appropriations was vetoed by the President on November 13, 2007. A compromise appropriations bill is currently being negotiated in Congress.
It is important to urge Members of Congress to support retention of the $4 million for the Patient Navigator Act in the final compromise appropriations bill.

Patient Navigator Bill Funding

Dear [ Decision Maker ],
As Congress works toward a compromise Fiscal Year 2008 appropriations bill funding the Department of Health and Human Services, I encourage you to ensure that it includes $4 million in start-up funding for the Patient Navigator program as was included in the original appropriations bill sent to President Bush.
In June 2005, the Patient Navigator, Outreach and Chronic Disease Prevention Act was passed with strong bipartisan support from Congress and signed into law. However, this program has yet to be funded and without an appropriation will face a sunset provision vacating the law.
The law will place trained "patient navigators" in community-based health facilities to help patients navigate an often fragmented and complicated system of care. Such navigators increase early diagnosis, improve quality, and save the health system the treatment costs of preventable complications.
I look forward to your support of the $4 million start-up appropriation for Fiscal Year 2008 for the Patient Navigator program. Thank you for your vote for quality health.
Sincerely, [Your name] [Your address]
