Raise Minimum Wage
Raise Minimum Wage

Write Your House Member about Raising Minimum Wage (if House vote still pending; when House passes bill, contact Governor) Senate File 875 is ready for House Passage. This bill would increase the state minimum wage to $7.90 per hour for large employers and to $6.75 per hour for small employers by July 2009. It also includes a provision for automatic annual cost of living increases beginning in 2010. This would put real dollars into the hands of over 300,000 workers in Minnesota. If the minimum wage had kept pace with inflation since 1968 it would be $9.66 per hour. More than half a million jobs in Minnesota pay less. Thirty-one states have set minimum wages higher than the federal minimum of $5.85 per hour. Minnesota's minimum wage is now in a three-way tie for last place among these states. -A Minnesota Without Poverty is an initiative sponsored by the six synods of the ELCA in Minnesota, Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, Lutheran Coalition for Public Policy in Minnesota and Joint Religious Legislative Coalition.
